| Social Leadership Cafe - Big Thinking for the World's Biggest Problems Catalyst in Partnership with The Hunger Project Tuesday 19 June 2007
What can really make the change we want with the world’s big problems? – eg. poverty, climate change. Is there a much bigger and more fulfilling role we can all play than attending rock concerts, wearing wrist bands and digging into our pockets? One of Catalyst’s greatest events yet. On a stormy night, 150+ guests connected with four remarkable speaks from The Hunger Project and then engaged in dialogue around café tables in Catalyst’s new Café format. They discussed two provocative questions on why ending hunger matters to each of us and what we can individually and collectively do about it, before Catalyst facilitator, Michael Hann, brought the excellent thinking from the 30 tables together. The Hunger Project is a global phenomenon in alleviating poverty. It’s 240 staff have caused the creation of 150 000 trained volunteer leaders in Africa, South Asia and South America who are currently enabling a massive 22 million people out of poverty. The results are lasting because a full social fabric is developed and, most remarkably, The Hunger Project globally currently runs on only US$15 million per annum. Special THP guests: Rita Sarin: Director of The Hunger Project in India Shailaja Narayana: grass roots leader in The Hunger Project - Project Coordinator at the Bharathi Welfare Society in Chintamani, Bangalore Cathy Burke: CEO of The Hunger Project Australia Rick Ball: Managing Director of Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley, and board member and personal supporter of The Hunger Project. From this event, a Venture Group comprised of guests exploring how they could actively support The Hunger Project, has been ‘catalysed’ and is now in operation.
